Nobel Laureate Inspires Students

9/1/26, 22:00

During PEP 2026, John C. Mather shared his experience as a scientist at NASA, inspiring students to imagine new possibilities for their futures.

One of the most memorable moments of the 2026 Progresa English Program was the visit of John C. Mather, a Nobel Prize–winning astrophysicist and scientist at NASA.

During the program, Dr. Mather offered a special session in which he shared stories about his life, his academic journey, and his work in the field of astrophysics and space exploration. Students had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the curiosity, perseverance, and passion that drive scientific discovery.

For many of the young Guatemalan students in the Progresa program, meeting a scientist of his stature was an extraordinary experience. His visit demonstrated that knowledge and dedication can open doors to remarkable opportunities. Students were able to ask questions, learn about the challenges and rewards of scientific research, and reflect on the importance of education in shaping their own futures.

Moments like this are deeply meaningful for Progresa students, many of whom come from rural or underserved communities where opportunities to meet international scientists or researchers are extremely rare. Dr. Mather’s visit left a lasting impression and reminded students that their ambitions and dreams can reach far beyond what they might have imagined.
